02:00 PM JCB Triumph Hurdle (Grade 1)

What a terrific performance from the grey Detroit City who was all heart as he saw off the challenge of stablemate Fair Along to justify a welter of ante-post support. Fair Along took them along at a good clip with Detroit City close up. Mister Hight made an early mistake and never really recovered, while Overlut was much too keen, and the likes of Turko and Afsoun surprisingly seemed to struggle with the pace of the race. Kasbah Bliss fell down the far side and Blazing Bailey was starting to stay on round the home turn, but the Hobbs pair had it to themselves from two out. Having it a flat spot before then, Richard Johnson got to work on Detroit City, and in a thrilling finish up the hill, he finally shook off Fair Along to prevail. It was a second Triumph success for Philip Hobbs after the victory of Made In Japan two years ago, while for owner Terry Warner it was a particularly poignant occasion after the loss of his star grey Rooster Booster. Perhaps Detroit City will go on and one day win a Champion Hurdle as well.

02:35 PM Brit Insurance Novices' Hurdle (Grade 2)

Black Jack Ketchum justified all the hype and support to send his legion of supporters into ecstacy as he strode up the hill to win unchallenged. Tony McCoy took a tug as Mister Top Notch, Super Lord and Travino tried to get him off the bridle, but there was no chance of that as the champion sat motionless until the top of the hill. Finally he let down a rein and the seven-year-old stamped his authority on the occasion to draw clear, with only Powerstation offering any resistance. With a performance like this, connections may well be ruing the fact that they did not take on Denman in the Royal & SunAlliance Chase instead, but at least we now know that we have a serious contender for next year's World Hurdle. Trainer Jonjo O'Neill could not be here as he has the flu, but this will surely give him a big tonic.

03:15 PM Totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup (Grade 1)

In one of the most wide open Gold Cups for years, Irish-trained horses monopolised the finish, with War Of Attrition holding on up the hill from Hedgehunter, with Forget The Past a gallant third. Ollie Magern set the early pace in company with Lord Of Illusion, while Royal Auclair and Ballycassidy were never too far away. Monkerhostin was pushed along to go with the pace, while Beef Or Salmon was held up to be produced at the business end. Iris's Gift jumped well but his challenge fizzled out a long way from home and Kingscliff made too many mistakes. Cornish Rebel made a vital mistake down the far side when just starting to stay on otherwise he may well have taken a hand in proceedings and it was left to last year's runner-up Take A Stand and French raider L'Ami to try and dislodge the Irish trio. None were good enough though, and with Kicking King absent, War Of Attrition has stolen his crown. It should be a mouthwatering confrontation when the pair meet up again. Today's victory was a second in the race for jockey Conor O'Dwyer, successful 10 years ago on Imperial Call. that was special, but this was just as sweet. Hedgehunter can now go to Aintree full of confidence, while Lord Of Illusion did his Grand National prospects no harm with a decent effort.

04:00 PM Christie's Foxhunter Chase Challenge Cup

Yet another big result for the Irish as yet again the first three home will take the prize money back to the Emerald Isle. However, it was not quite the outcome everyone anticipated as Harbour Pilot never really recovered from an early mistake despite Nina Carberry working wonders in the saddle to keep the partnership intact, and it was no surprise when he back-pedaled well before the end. Boneyarrow was an early casualty before Gatsby settled down to help make the running, with Bothar Na, Camden Carrig and Joe Blake just a few in touch along with Cobreces, Bosham Mill and Drumbeag. Racing down towards the last, Gatsby folded and it was Whyso Mayo who came through to lead being pursued by First Down Jets who had been hunted around throughout by Colm Sweeney. Joe Blake held every chance but had nothing left up the hill as the front two knuckled down to fight it out, and in the end it was Whyso Mayo that lasted out best under Damian Murphy, who said that he would celebrate with a few glasses of water as he doesn't drink alcohol! What a shame!!!

04:40 PM Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase (Grade 3)

There was not a dry eye in the house after this result as Nicky Henderson got his wish in winning the race named in honour of his father. The master of Seven Barrows sent out four runners but it was obvious from an early point of proceedings that Greenhope was the best hope as he set out to dominate from the inside. He was pressed throughout by Tiger Cry, and with two to jump Ground Ball and Nyrche were in with every chance as well. Greenhope's jumping won him the day though, and as he pinged the last, the tears were already starting to flow. Madison Du Berlais caught the eye, staying for third past Nyrche, but neither he nor Tiger Cry were going to spoil the party. Favourite backers knew their fate early on as Andreas came down at the fourth, and quite a few others failed to make it round. The result was the right one though, and it was nice to see practically every other trainer involved in the race seeking out Henderson to shake his hand and offer their congratulations. What a price as well for the winner-20-1 no less!

05:20 PM Vincent O'Brien County Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3)

Ruby Walsh needed to win to wrestle the leading rider title from Tony McCoy and he pulled it out of the fire in style. His mount Desert Quest was always going well behind the leaders, and as Adamant Approach came through with his effort two out in company with Noble Request, Ruby was still oozing confidence. He jumped the last full of running to race past that pair and into the history books to give Paul Nicholls the final say of what was a memorable Festival. There were plenty of disappointments though as Studmaster never figured, while Khetaam got going too late, finishing just out of the money in fifth. Buck Whaley was an early faller, and Martin Pipe's miserable week ended as it had started in defeat.
