Challenge Cup
- Trends
Age
- Seven and eight year olds hold a significant advantage statistically
so rule out all others.
Recent Form and Experience
- Rule out any runner not placed in it's last outing especially
fallers as this amateur riders event over 4 miles needs a horse who
needs little encouragement to clear the obstacles, your selection should
have a 1 in the form on one or two of its last runs. You should avoid
horses that come into the race with a 45 day+ absence from a race track,
and the obvious stat is that previous Cheltenham form is a big
advantage.
Market Position
- The top four in the betting usually perform well, but the trends are
moving to longer priced horses in recent years so if a horse fits the
bill at big odds don't be put off!
Trainers
- Jonjo O'Neill has an outstanding record in this race and his runners
are worthy of support if meeting most of the trends criteria.
Other Positives
- Hold up horses have a great record so avoid front runners as the
early pace in the race normally takes its toll in the final mile.
PERFECTION: A seven or eight year
old, trained by Jonjo who has decent recent form and likes to finish late,
owned by J P McManus.
