William Hill Trophy - Trends

Age
  • Recent changes in the trends in the last few years, has been the performances of the 8 and 9 year old horses in the field, to the extent where we now confidently put a line through any horse aged 10+ or below 8, this trend narrows down the selections considerably.

Recent Form and Experience

  • Look for a horse with winning handicap chase form over the distance, though the Cheltenham course form is not a strong factor, also look for a horse who has been lightly campaigned for the season and ideally had no more than 3 runs for the season.

Market Position

  • A terrible race for favourite backers, a race where you should avoid the first two in the betting and not be afraid to look down the betting for a lively outsider.

Trainers

  • No obvious winning trend.

Other Positives

  • Avoid any horse over 11st, as this 3m takes some getting and the winners tend to be off a generous handicap mark.

PERFECTION: Go for an 8 or 9 year old, who is at least 3rd in the betting, your selection should have been only out a maximum of 3 times this season, have a handicap win in the formbook over 3m+ and is in the race off a handicap mark than means running with under 11st.
